FALL 2024: Open Access and Digital Publishing for Humanists
- Are you ready for your research to reach broader audiences but aren’t sure where to start?
- Have you heard the terms “open access” or “open science” but aren’t sure how they apply to the humanities?
- Are you thinking about how digital technologies and media could enhance the presentation or dissemination of your research?
- Do you feel intimidated by the landscape of scholarly publishing and could use some guidance on how it’s changing?
This three-session workshop, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will provide a primer on open access book publishing for humanities faculty, including what makes a book a good candidate for open access and how and when to discuss open access with editors. We’ll dive into the ways that digital publishing is extending possibilities for the traditional monograph, including through “enhanced” digital editions, companion sites, and born-digital interactive books. Participants will hear from Emory faculty who have recently published books in these formats and from relevant experts in the publishing field.
This workshop will take place over lunchtime (11.30AM-1.30PM) on three Fridays: 10/18, 11/15, and 1/24, in the Seminar Room of Emory University's Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry.
There is a $500 research stipend associated with this program. Participants must be actively working on a research monograph that they are considering for open access and/or digital publication. In-person attendance at all sessions and completion of pre- and post-workshop surveys is required. Lunch will be provided.
This workshop is designed for full-time faculty in humanities disciplines at Emory University and other Atlanta-area institutions. Spots are limited and you are advised to register early! Registration does not guarantee admission: please wait for an email notification confirming your place.
