For authors working on an enhanced edition in Manifold and who are interested in managing the backend of their project site, this website provides detailed guidance. The most relevant sections for most authors are "Projects" and "Resources."
For authors working on an enhanced edition in Quire and who are interested in understanding the fundamentals of how Quire works, this website walks the user through the basic structure of a project.
Project Development
ECDS offers technical expertise for initiating open access digital projects. Additional funding may be necessary depending on the scope and complexity of the project. ECDS may also collaborate with a university press on book projects with a digital component.
The Program to Enhance Research and Scholarship (PERS) offers modest seed funding for new research, research travel, other research-related activities, and matches for equipment grants. A limited amount of funding is also available to presenters at international and national research conferences.
The Center for Faculty Development and Excellence offers a grant program to help faculty advance public scholarship-related activities, including hiring an editor to help you draft a crossover trade book proposal, traveling to conduct research related to public scholarship, or developing a platform or profile for public scholarship.
The Center for Faculty Development and Excellence offers a grant program to offset the costs of professional editorial support for a range of project types, including book manuscripts and digital scholarship. Funds are not restricted to open access publications.
Each year, all regular, continuing full-time faculty are invited to submit one application in one of the six URC award categories. Faculty members who receive a URC award are ineligible to submit another URC proposal for 3 award cycles following the award acceptance year.
URC grants of up to $30,000 are awarded in six categories:
- Arts: Performing/Visual
- Biological & Health Sciences
- Humanities
- Mathematics & Natural Sciences
- Social Sciences
- Special Category: Interdisciplinary proposals with 2 or more applicants - $40,000 maximum
Applicants focused on international research will be considered for the URC-Halle Institute for Global Research Award via the standard URC categories.
Publication Assistance
Emory College offers funding for books under contract with a scholarly publisher to offset production costs, such as permissions fees, copyediting, and indexing. Funds are not restricted to open access publications.
Developed by the Scholarly Communications Office of Emory Libraries in collaboration with the University of Michigan, the model publishing contract is a modular and customizable template designed to help navigate the unique legal challenges of publishing digital and open access projects.
Administered by the Scholarly Communications Office of Emory Libraries, this fund assists with publication fees for open access journals and books. Funds are available to Emory faculty, post-docs, researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students, with reimbursement of up to $1,500.

Resources Beyond Emory
In 2022, Brown University Library and the National Endowment for the Humanities offered a two-week institute on digital publishing, focused on academic monographs. The full name of the institute was Born-Digital Scholarly Publishing: Resources and Roadmaps. All of the presentations are now freely available to view online, including tutorials on Manifold, WordPress and Scalar, and workshops on how to move from a digital humanities project to a digital book, and how to pitch digital book projects to publishers.
